Riding out of a rut
Feels like I’m heading back to where I started, as a young boy my bicycle represented freedom and adventure. The wheels that took me to far off places, literally, I covered massive distances as a kid, I would head out and ride as often as possible. Weekdays after school I would aim for 35km and weekends anything from 80-140km. When I entered into the teens thats where things started to change, my interests shifted and the love for cycling that was always there started to fade. I discovered music and got into Dj’ing, spinning 12” records in my parents home, playing music so loud that the tiles rattled off the wall in the kitchen. I often wonder why I didn’t pursue cycling as a profession as I was not short of talent, one thing I can say is that of all the interests that have come and gone over the years, my bicycle has always been there to get me back in the game when I have fallen into a slump. There is a saying, “you cannot think your way out of a rut as its your mind that got you there in the first place, you have to move your way out by moving your body through exercise”.
